Job Summary:
The Surgical Processor, in collaboration with all internal and external users of the SPD Service, works to effectively provide safe, clean, and sterile equipment, supplies and instruments according to prescribed standards based, approved procedures and techniques and following infection control and safety protocols.
Specific duties include decontamination of all instrumentation including flexible and rigid scopes, assembly, inspection, testing, wrapping, sterilizing or rendering items high level disinfected using prescribed techniques and maintaining rigorous record keeping practices.
Alberta Health Services requires all employees working in medical device reprocessing to be a qualified graduate from a Surgical Processor course or program and successfully completed their Certified Medical Device Reprocessing Technician (CMDRT) Exam – no later than March 31, 2016.
Mandatory certification will be a condition of employment for all employees performing MDR duties in the designated areas as of April 1, 2016.
Qualifications:
– IAHCSMM or CSA certification required.
– Grade 12 or Canadian equivalent with a recognized Surgical Processing Certificate course.
– A minimum of two years experience in sterile processing is preferred.
– Must be willing to attend educational courses related to work duties.
– Must be able to demonstrate and understand the correct operating procedures for all equipment within the area, including steam and low temperature sterilization and have a sound knowledge of the different methods of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization.
– Must understand the principles of aseptic technique as related to instruments, supplies and equipment preparation and exemplify thoroughness and attention to detail.
– Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in reading, writing and following written and verbal instructions in English.
– Must be able to work independently and demonstrate ability to prioritize, organize and communicate with team members to ensure collaboration in meeting work objectives.
– Must be able to lift packages up to 15 pounds, reach, bend stoop and stand for long periods of time.
